Average Joe: Carry On! (Ep #5)

Joe's family vacation is off to a bad start!

This is part one of a story arc I'm starting where Joe and his family go on vacation. So, obviously, he needs to be tortured by the airport staff first. This is only the beginning!

This is our first cartoon animated in Toon Boom Harmony

Tips on Lip Sync Animation

Hey everybody! James here.

I get a lot of requests about my process for doing lip sync animation. So I thought I'd share a brief tutorial on basic lip sync.

Here's my process in a nutshell, it allows me to basically fly through doing lip sync. I call this the "layered lip sync" technique.

NOTE: I almost always do the lip sync AFTER the final body and facial animation is completed. That way I'm focused on the performance first, which is the most important aspect of the shot.

I. Blocking

What I'll do first, after listening to the audio about a thousand times and memorizing all of the vocal inflections, is scrub through the timeline and pick out where I want the mouth to open and close.

The Animation Process: Part I

Hey everyone, James here.

I've been getting a lot of questions about the Faux Reel animation process so I've decided to put together a series of blog posts detailing exactly how a shot in one of our cartoons goes from script to final animation.

I'll be using a clip from the upcoming Average Joe cartoon. I'm animating it as I write this blog post so it's actually still unfinished which is why I'm doing several posts instead of just one long one.
